我们一起读名著（二）《Jane Eyre》

      简爱的前四章讲述了十岁的孤儿Jane在舅母家的生活（我想加个悲惨，觉得不妥，就没放）。Jane是个爱读童话书的外柔内刚的女孩，由于双亲已故，寄人篱下，舅舅早逝，舅母待她难如己出，Jane的童心埋下对礼教和冷漠人群的怨恨。文章前四节里，Jane的世界里充斥着抗衡和敌意，整个Gateshead里，无论大人小孩，似乎都恨不得奴役她，蹂躏她，践踏她，连女工都可以说她连仆人都不如。Bessie是Jane唯一可以好好谈话的人，她对Jane也更温柔，即便如此，Bessie的性格阴晴不定，小Jane渴望依靠的心无处可逃。

        Jane终于在舅母儿子Jone的一次粗鲁挑衅后爆发（如原文女工话，她的内心就藏有这样的“邪恶”），并被关进舅舅生前呼出最后一口气的房子里。在里面Jane紧张、挣扎、哭闹，却被舅母冷漠地置之不理，直到夜里昏厥后被抬回自己房间。苏醒后在和药剂师的谈话过程中，Jane表示自己愿意去学校，过一种新的生活。舅母因为不愿再与Jane早熟另类的抗争相处，也打算把她打发去学校受训。在见了一个“雕塑”后，Jane坐上开往女子学校的车，毫无遗憾地告别晦涩的Gateshead生活。

       前四章语法生词都较难，看了三遍思路才开始顺畅点。

       Jane爱读fairy story，Bessie也常会和她们将里面的故事，每次Jane读书，书里的内容都为前四章渲染的灰色空间增添孩童般鲜亮的色彩。而我读来，就像穿过衣柜的门，闯入始料未及的纳尼亚世界，人马、狮子、怪兽。。。迎面扑来，应接不暇。如果你还看过《指环王》，精灵部落会让人更加神往。当然，魔戒里是成人世界的精灵，完美冷酷，森林里清冷的白光；而儿童的精灵，是挥着魔棒踮着脚尖，轻触一朵花，闪过一串星光的童话。

        

       I considered it a narrative of facts, and discovered in it a vein of interest deeper than what I found in fairy tales: for as to the elves, having sought them in vain among fox-glove leaves and bells, under mushrooms and beneath the ground-ivy mantling old wall-nooks, I had at length made up my mind to the sad truth, that they were all gone out of England to some savage country where the woods were wilder and thicker, and the population more scant; whereas, Lilliput and Brobdingnag being, in my creed, solid parts of the earth's surface, I doubted not that I might one day, by taking a long voyage, see with my own eyes the little fields, houses, and trees, the diminutive people, the tiny cows, sheep, and birds of the one realm; and the corn-fields, forest-high, the mighty mastiffs, the monster cats, the tower-like men and women, of the other.

       夏洛特精于用词，简爱的主人公又都喜爱文学，词句话语自然精准到位，不落俗套。我担心Scarlett要是和她们一起，一顿饭也难吃下。

       以下这段我认为最富喜剧和动漫色彩，想象下如果它是组动漫画面呢~~~

    

        Mrs. Reed was rather a stout woman; but, on hearing this strange and audacious declaration, she ran nimbly up the stair, swept me like a whirlwind into the nursery, and crushing me down on the edge of my crib, dared me in an emphatic voice to rise from that place, or utter one syllable during the remainder of the day.

第五章开始Jane的学校生活。这是一所女子慈善学校，里面收留的都是失去单亲或双亲的女生。学校以天主教宗教为训，要求学生过教徒一样的生活。上课坐得笔直，开小差被鞭打，吃得少且差，不尊师长被罚，不打扫被罚，相比舅母家更苛刻。Jane此际还没惹出事来，新鲜感和烦闷感交织，并且，新事物总是神秘。她群居生活第一天便遇到一位比自己大的女孩。女孩的出场是在看书，没有童话故事和插页对Jane没太大吸引力的书。这个女孩向Jane介绍了学校的背景和四位日常接触的女老师的特点，但初见女孩并不想和Jane深入对话。

        Jane很快再看到这个女孩，看到她上课被体罚的全过程。从老师口中她得知这女孩叫Burns，她在课堂上对各种问题流利的回答和其后继续被训斥鞭打的反差让Jane百思不得其解。下课后，两人再次相遇并对话。这段非常精彩，可以说一洗文章开头至今的阴霾。Helen Burns的出现是我对简爱喜爱的开始，也是当年高中同桌推荐我看中文版简爱的理由。同桌说，这个女孩你一定会喜欢，可惜她身子也不好。

        Jane初始Helen，眼中的她：

         She looks as if she were thinking of something beyond her punishment—beyond her situation: of something not round her nor before her. I have heard of day-dreams—is she in a daydream now? Her eyes are fixed on the floor, but I am sure they do not see it— her sight seems turned in, gone down into her heart: she is looking at what she can remember, I believe; not at what is really present. I wonder what sort of a girl she is—whether good or naughty.’

      第六章Helen暗藏的锋芒初露，气场不凡。十几岁的女孩说出人生道理来，闻者皆可叹服。三观尽现，Jane的生命里这一定是最难忘的一段。

      摘录几句台词：

      It is far better to endure patiently a smart which nobody feels but yourself, than to commit a hasty action whose evil consequences will extend to all connected with you; and besides, the Bible bids us return good for evil。

 

‘Yet it would be your duty to bear it, if you could not avoid it: it is weak and silly to say you CANNOT BEAR what it is your fate to be required to bear.’

 

     Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs.

 

      when debasement and sin will fall from us with this cumbrous frame of flesh, and only the spark of the spirit will remain.

      第七章Jane終於惹事了，在“雕像”進行全校檢查時，她摔碎了自己的Slate（I don't know what's the purpose of slate），被罰當中站在凳子上。前面用一大段篇幅講了雕像和Miss Temple關於學生紀律和儀錶規範的談話，雕像的刻板無人性被貴婦VIP的插入顯得可笑，相信孩子們在底下都暗自唾駡。Jane被示眾后看到Helen的微笑，心里頓時溫暖起來。Helen要成為本文的Melanie啦~~

      What a smile! I remember it now, and I know that it was the effluence of fine intellect, of true courage; it lit up her marked lineaments, her thin face, her sunken grey eye, like a reflection from the aspect of an angel.

      最近工作中涉及英語的部份明顯輕鬆起來，真是有進步了。

后面还有很多这种情况，可能真是习惯，即转述第三人的论述时用第三人称并加引号。

第四章也有温暖的地方，比如Jane喂樱桃树上的知更鸟的时候，从叙事手法的角度固然是为了引出他的离去，但单独来看那段确实挺温馨。

今天没读书，还是昨天晚上读了第五章。感觉Temple有点像Melanie 啊，不过Burns也是不错的。第五章是痛苦心酸的女校生活的开始。
